A vision for change in the Mwanza district of Tanzania |
|
Financial support for low cost housing Tumaini na Upendo was established in Tanzania in 2006 to provide care in poor communities in the Mwanza region of Tanzania. Fred and Margaret, its founder Directors, along with 3 Tanzanian Co-Directors, have been based in the rural area of Ilemela since 2004. During this time they have met various needs within the community, including:
- funding medical tests and treatment for the many diseases resulting from poverty
- providing food for widows, the sick and families with no visible source of income
- organised sponsorship to educate children from poor families
Tumaini na Upendo is currently in the process of purchasing land to build a care facility for the terminally ill. This will be the first of its kind in the Mwanza region (Tanzania's 2nd largest city). The sick, especially AIDS victims, are often discarded by their families and left to die in appalling conditions. This facility will allow the terminally ill, regardless of their ethnic background or religious beliefs, to die with dignity in a safe environment.
Resource distribution to a local school The long term vision is to see a community established in which:
- provision is made for the care of orphans and widows
- the terminally ill are given a safe home and free medical treatment
- a medical clinic is set up to provide subsidised treatment for the poor
- small businesses are established to provide employment opportunities
